Mornings in the Garden in September are always interesting. Some mornings, the cats have left us a gift, but recently, we heard the first flock of Canadian geese since last spring when they headed north. It’s a time of transition.
The Garden continues to produce abundantly. The melons are almost finished. They did particularly well this year.
Cherry Tomatoes

There are plenty of cherry tomatoes. We are lagging behind as they are maturing quicker than they are being used. On the other hand, we are harvesting the larger tomatoes as soon as they turn color, as the demand for them is high.
Peppers
The peppers are turning red. We harvest once a week or more frequently if needed. At any rate, we have a good supply of all the peppers we planted. So let us know when you need more for pickling, hot sauce, smoked paprika, etc.
Sweet Potatoes

We started harvesting the sweet potatoes this week. Yes, this is earlier than in the past year, but we did so for two reasons. One, we harvested several gigantic sweet potatoes in the past. Our goal was to have more reasonable sizes this year. The second reason we harvested early was our arch nemesis, Mr. Gopher. We were justly concerned that if we didn’t get them out of the ground, there would be none to harvest. The potatoes need a couple of weeks to cure before use.
Fennel

Cooler temperatures mean that we have fennel available again. It’s so nice not to see it bolt to flowering a week after planning because of the hot weather!
Squash
The butternut and delicata squashes are looking good. We will harvest them in October or when the vines die back.
Come on out to the Garden to see what else we have growing. There are plenty of vegetables which I didn’t mention.
See you in the Garden.
