We will be harvesting the winter squashes, including these Cinderella pumpkins, very soon. The vines are gradually dying, and the squash’s outer shells are getting harder so that they will resist rotting in storage.
The zucchinis and patty pans are in their final weeks of production. Next, we will pull them and plant a cover crop.
In the next two weeks, we will harvest the fingerling and sweet potatoes. We could have a harvest party if it’s a slow day in the kitchen!
As the mice and voles scurry around looking for winter homes, the cats keep busy discouraging their activity. The popcorn continues to dry on the stalk. Since we plan to plant fava beans where the popcorn is growing, we will harvest by mid-month. Then we’ll dry the popcorn inside before you delight in popping corn from our Garden.
The fall/winter brassicas look amazing. Our timing and the weather cooperated, and the plants are well established. I expect to see cauliflower heads forming soon. However, it will probably be early November before they are ready.
Broccoli will be ready in late January/early February.
We can start a light harvest of kale leaves in another 2-3 weeks. The same is true with dragon’s tongue mustard greens.
We are still harvesting leeks, tomatoes, and peppers.
These are the seed heads of the aptly named Blackberry lily.
Come out to the Garden and see what other treasures we have growing!
