state of the garden

November 7, 2022 - State Of Chefs Garden

We’ve hit the sweepstakes with the daikon, which is growing in the stock tanks this year. How long are they? Are they like icebergs, with the majority hidden underground? The answers to these riveting questions will be revealed next week as I plan to dig some this week before they freeze.

November is off to a wet start, with the rain gauge measuring 3.69 inches from November 1 to this morning, November 6! Rain will continue today and tomorrow, but after that, no rain in the forecast for the next week. Along with drier days, we’ll get freezing temps at night as an added bonus. The freeze always puts me a bit on edge as we juggle with what to harvest and what to cover.

We won’t cover the cauliflower because the plants are so large. Consequently, we’ll harvest any heads that are exposed. That means we’ll harvest the Romanesco heads on Monday.

We have 2 varieties of cabbage this fall. The first variety (‘Tinty’) is the red conical cabbage. It’s ready now. The other variety (‘Filderkraut’) is forming heads and will be ready to start harvesting next month. The heads will be huge: 15-24 inches tall with 5-6 inch bases. We went long in cabbage this year, so you can start coming up with ideas on how to use it.

We also went long in radicchio. We have plantings in 3 different stages of growth. Yes, we are harvesting some now. They should survive any freezing just fine.

We will probably harvest the largest of the fennel before it freezes to be on the safe side, but we will check in with you first.

There’s never a dull moment in the garden. So come out between rain showers to see what else we have growing.
