State Of The Garden

Purple Cauliflower

The cauliflower harvest continues. The purple variety is finished, and we are starting on the white variety. We still have a few heads of the orange, plus more types to come.

kohlrabi

Chef's Garden Kohlrabi

We have a large crop of kohlrabi that needs harvesting. It waits in the field and will get some splitting.

Greens

Chef's Garden Red Russian Kale

The fall weather has been kind to the greens that we are growing. Everything has put on good growth and is harvestable size. We have kale, collards, dragons tongue mustard, and rainbow chard. Let us know when you need some.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes

The sweet potatoes have been cured and are ready for use. As you can see, we do not have uniform-sized tubers. Instead, we have variety! There’s no doubt they will have fantastic flavor!

Squash

Winter Squashes And Sweet Potatoes

We will bring in some butternut squashes this week. We also have delicata squashes ready for use.

Olives

Chefs Garden Olives

We have 20+ olive trees on the property. They bear fruit in alternate years. This year is a bearing year, so we harvested some this past week. Fresh olives are very bitter, so we cure them to make them palatable. We are currently in that process. You can expect olives to be ready for consumption in about ten days.

Devil's Coach Horse Beetle

Devil's Coach Horse Beetle

This visitor to the greenhouse is commonly known as a “Devil’s Coach Horse Beetle.” It curls its abdomen and opens its jaws to look menacing when it feels threatened. You might not see the two white dots at the tip of its abdomen. That is nasty-smelling defensive secretion, just in case the defensive posture isn’t enough!

There is never a dull moment in the garden. Come on out when you need a change of pace!
