Chef's Garden Daffodils

The sunny days this week, the final week of February, spurred the daffodils to start blooming. We can typically expect a dry week sometime in February; every time, it’s a gift to enjoy. It’s made all the sweeter by preceding storms, which made Ark building an attractive idea!

Celeriac

We harvested the last of the celeriac this week. The celeriac weathered “snow, rain, heat, and gloom of night” to provide great produce for the kitchen. We will have celeriac again next fall.

Broccoli

It is broccoli time! The sunny days aided the development of side shoots and the main heads. The cold temperatures did not damage the broccoli this year, so we have more. We harvested some on Friday, just as a warning shot across your bows. We have a lot and will be harvesting regularly between now and April.

Overwintered Cauliflower

The overwintered cauliflower is still in the infant stage. It will be at least a month before we can think about harvesting it.

Fava Beans

The fava beans survived this year. (You might remember that last year, the deep freeze in January terminated the crop before it could flower.  We will have more information about the crop as it approaches the May/June harvesting time.

Peppers

This week we started the main seeding season by planting the many varieties of peppers we grow yearly.

Peas

An even more exciting event is that we planted peas outside on Friday! Of course, we have to wait until late May/early June before we can harvest. By then, winter weather will be a dim memory.
