Hail in Chef's Garden

It has been an interesting week of spring weather- sunshine, wind, rain, thunder, hail, oh my! Yes, that is hail in the photo. The crops that have survived the winter weather scoff at spring weather. They are just fine!

Purple Overwintered Cauliflower

We are harvesting purple overwintered cauliflower. The white overwintered cauliflower is still in the infant stage. We will have cauliflower for the next 3-4 weeks.

Purple Overwintered Sprouting Broccoli

We will harvest a steady supply of the purple overwintered sprouting broccoli. We planted too much last fall because we have a lot ready now.

Mustard Greens

The cool season crop of mustard greens in the greenhouse is growing quickly. We are harvesting weekly.

Arugula

Spring is the time of rapid growth of lovely greens. We also have a stock tank of arugula in the greenhouse, which we harvest weekly.

Seedlings

We are juggling trays of seedlings on the heat tables. All the peppers and tomatoes are germinating. In about ten days, we will transplant them into larger pots and free up heat table space for the next wave of seeds. This is our promise for a bountiful summer harvest. Those innocent-looking sprouts will be overflowing with fruit. In spring, it is easy to forget being overwhelmed with loads of peppers and tomatoes. We will attempt to restrain ourselves and only plant what we have pre-determined to be the right amount!

Praying Mantis Egg Case

When harvesting rosemary, we came across this interesting structure on one of the branches. It’s an egg case for a praying mantis! We love finding praying mantis adults in the garden. They are part of our integrated pest management team, and the cats are another branch of that team.

The weather forecast for the rest of March looks like waves of storms. So when there’s a break in the rain, come to the garden to see what else we have growing.
