The strawberries are looking better this week. We’ll be glad when there is more food available and the robins stop eating them. Or that the plants grow large enough that the leaves hide the berries.
Blooming Milkweed

The fully blooming, showy milkweed is very fragrant. We aren’t the only ones enjoying the flowers; the honeybees are convinced that we planted them for their dining pleasure.
Lettuce
We continue to harvest lettuce by the boatload. We covered it with shade cloth to reduce the heat and bright sun. Lettuce is not known for its fondness of 90-degree days!
Snap Peas

The peas have been excellent this year. We are nearing the end of the snap pea season. We are about mid-way through the shelling pea season. We harvested heavily in anticipation of the upcoming heat wave.
Basil
We planted the basil this week. As soon as it is large enough, we will start harvesting. We have several varieties.
Micro-greens
We have struggled with micro-green germination the past couple of weeks. We are working on remedying the situation.
Asparagus Starts

It was an act of great faith to plant the asparagus starts, which resemble a bunch of spaghetti connected to a plant crown. Almost all of the crowns have begun to grow. If you look closely at the photo, there is a purple asparagus spear just slightly off 12 o’clock. This year, they get to grow. Next year, we can harvest fat spears only for 2 weeks. Each year thereafter, we can increase the length of harvest time.
There is a lot more going on in the garden. Come on out to see for yourself.
