Chefs Garden Milkweed Blooms

June is here! We are excited to see the first blooms of the showy milkweed this week. This project has taken 18 months, from planting to flowering. It will be interesting to note which pollinators come to visit.

Lettuce

Everything is growing at breakneck speed. Lettuce is growing well, which you have probably noted by the vast amount of lettuce we are currently harvesting.

Peas

This year is turning out to be an excellent year for peas. We will start harvesting the shelling peas on Monday. We continue to harvest the snap peas. Enjoy them while you can, as they have a short season.

Strawberries

So far, strawberry production has been slow. We are working on that. I have a couple of tricks up my sleeve to encourage more fruit.

Turnips

We have lovely turnips right now. We are harvesting both the baby-sized ones and larger ones that have escaped the petite stage.

Daikon

We planted daikon to see if we could get some harvestable-sized roots by early June. We have both purple and white daikon, which we will harvest as needed.

Kohlrabi

We harvested small kohlrabi and small radishes this week. We grow them in the cooler months. After we harvest all that we have planted, we will have a break until next fall.

Fava Beans

The fava beans look great. We will harvest them as they reach maturity.

Sweet Potato Slips

We’ve planted the sweet potato slips. They’ll be ready for harvesting in late September.

We have plenty of other things growing, so come out to the garden to see!
