- The broccoli is slowly developing and becoming more distinctly purple. Presuming it will survive the coming freeze, it should be ready for harvesting in the next ten days. Purple broccoli is only the first of three varieties. The other two varieties haven’t started forming heads yet.
- We harvested the last of the parsnips this week. You’ll have to wait until next winter for more.
- I’ve found more of the black Spanish radishes we planted last fall. We have them growing in three different places. Let us know when you need them.
- Look what else I found when inspecting the stock tanks-miners’ lettuce! It’s too small for harvesting yet, but we’ll keep an eye on it and let you know as it gets closer to a usable size. We will be weeding this week, so it has room to grow.
- You’ll be glad to hear that all the honey bee colonies are alive and well. Whenever we have a sunny afternoon, we see some intrepid bees from each colony outside getting fresh air. This early in the year, they can find pollen from hazelnut trees but no nectar.
- We can harvest more kale, but the leaves aren’t large. The plants know winter is retreating and the days are lengthening, so they are changing gears from vegetative growth to seed production. This means that their energy isn’t focused on growing large leaves.
- In the greenhouse, we have plenty of micro-greens. They’re growing quite well right now.
- We’re harvesting radishes as they reach a decent size.
- The first harvest of frills mustard is looming. I’ll ask you if you have a need for it.
- We should be able to harvest baby lettuce this week.
- Last fall, we planted a couple of buckets full of daffodil bulbs; they are up and on their way to providing amazing blooms. Spring is on the way!
Come out to the Garden to see what else we have growing.
