State Of The Garden - February 20, 2023

Last Tuesday morning we were greeted with the presence of a bit of snow. The temperature was above freezing so it soon melted.

Purple Sprouting Broccoli | The Allison gardeners are harvesting the purple sprouting broccoli at least once per week to stay on top of production.

Kale | The gardeners will harvest kale this coming week for Chef John. The leaves are small because the plants are transitioning out of leaf production and moving to flower and seed production.

Radicchio | The greenhouse has more of these small radicchio heads. They have fared quite well this winter despite being exposed to the elements. The freezing temperatures have made them sweeter or at least much less bitter. Plus they are gorgeous!

Parsley | The parsley is in good shape and is being harvested as needed.

Lettuce, Frills Mustard, & Arugula | All are harvested weekly.

Rainbow Chard | The garden has a fall planting of rainbow chard, which can start being harvested in modest amounts. The leaves are still on the small side.

Celeriac | The celeriac, which will be harvested next fall, has germinated!

Parsley | Anna, our Master Gardener, says, “The summer parsley is thinking about germinating – they take so long!”

Hot Pepper Seeds | The gardeners will plant the hot pepper seeds this week. These hot peppers take a long time to germinate as they are not fans of cold weather.

The Allison has long lamented the gopher population around the hotel because they migrate to the garden and become a problem. Because of this, the gardeners built a barn owl box and installed it on the hillside by the vineyard this week. Time will tell if any owls accept their invitation for new living quarters.

Ask for a tour of the garden when you need a breath of fresh air.
