State of the Garden

Chef's Garden With Frozen Ground

We had 17 days without recorded precipitation. Days were sunny and above freezing, and each night dropped below freezing. In the photo, you can see the frosty ground in the shade of the fence at 10:00, but the plants and ground not in the shade have thawed. We waited to harvest until late morning and afternoon when the leaves were no longer frozen.

Radicchio

Despite the freezing temperatures, the garden is in good shape. The radicchio’s outer leaves, which we usually remove, were damaged from freezing. Underneath those leaves, the plants have beautiful heads.

Sunchokes

The sticks in the ground indicate the amount of sunchokes left to be harvested. We will let you know when we see the end of harvesting approaching. Since they are buried, they show no effect from freezing.

Garden Herbs

We harvested a small amount of parsley that didn’t freeze. The rosemary is also in good shape. We’re harvesting it for multiple uses in the kitchen. We should be in good shape.

Celeriac Tops

The celeriac tops show the effect of being frozen for multiple nights. However, the roots underneath are still in good shape, as you can see from the photo. At any rate, we have a good supply of celeriac yet to harvest.

Microgreens

The Microgreens are in good shape. They grew quite well with the sunny days.

Sprouting Broccoli

We’ll have sprouting broccoli ready to harvest in the next few weeks. Right now, only 2 plants have visible heads. We’ll keep our eyes on them and keep you aware of progress.

Miner's Lettuce

Another up-and-coming item is miner’s lettuce.  We will have a lot, but it’s still small right now. It will be another month or so before we can harvest.

All in all the garden is in good shape.

Come out to see what else we have growing.
