As you can tell, the garden was snowy! The first, and maybe the only, snowfall of the season blanketed the area on Thursday, leading into Friday. The purple-sprouting broccoli should be just fine. We will start harvesting within the next 10 days. The overwintered cauliflower leaves are tightly wrapped around their centers. We should have cauliflower in March/April.
Celeriac
The celeriac is still hanging in there. We thought the colder temperatures this past week would end their careers, but that was not the case. We have enough to last for another week or so of heavy harvesting.
Green Garlic
The garlic ignores cold and snow. We are still several weeks away from green garlic harvest time.
Rosemary
Rosemary harvesting is going well. Unlike last year, when the tips froze, this year’s growing tips are vibrant green. We are keeping the kitchen stocked.
Snowy Crocus
The first brave crocus showed through the snow, a reminder that spring is indeed on the way. We have to get through the crazy weather phase.
Greenhouse Plants
The greenhouse plants are looking good. We’re harvesting lettuce regularly, adding baby arugula and baby mustard greens to our harvest schedule.
Beehives
The bees are snug in their hives, but some fly out looking for pollen when the sun hits them. So far this winter, all of the colonies are still alive. We are monitoring them closely to ensure they do not run out of food before they start foraging for nectar and pollen.
We keep looking at all the seed packets, anxiously waiting for the day we can start planting seeds in the greenhouse. Patience is a virtue.
