Just when we thought that we might be over the worst of the winter weather we were reminded that indeed we were not in charge of the weather.
Purple Sprouting Broccoli | “The purple sprouting broccoli should be fine. Remember that we have three varieties with different maturing dates. There is still more to come,” says Anna Ashby, master gardener of The Allison.
Kale | Anna reassures us that the kale will also be fine, “It is quite hardy.”
Radicchio | Another plant which will be just fine is the radicchio. The varieties that The Allison are currently growing were developed for growing in low light, low temperature conditions – winter. There is still a good amount hiding under the snow waiting to be harvested.
Since we cannot see what else is happening under the snow, let’s turn our attention to the greenhouse.
Celeriac, Parsley, & Alyssum | These flats (pictured) of tiny seedlings are filled with celeriac, parsley, and alyssum. Alyssum is a favored plant for many of the beneficial insects that the gardeners encourage to live in the garden.
Radishes | The gardeners are harvesting radishes as they attain a decent size.
Lettuce, Frills Mustard, & Arugula | The Allison also has lettuce, frills mustard, and arugula that the gardeners are harvesting weekly. Pictured, you can see a sample of the lettuce. There is a good amount planted and quite a bit coming along behind this size, as seen in the photo. In the background are flats of micro-greens, of which there is plenty.
Come on out to the garden, once the snow is gone, to see what else
is growing!
