It has been a busy year of trying new varieties and plants and standing by our old favorites. So come along for a whirlwind tour of the year.
Spring was a season of prolonged rain. As a result, the bees couldn’t fly enough to make an early honey crop, and even the worms unsuccessfully attempted to flee across the parking lot, only to be swept downhill in the runoff.
Despite the very wet and compacted soil, the summer vegetables persevered, converting sunlight into energy and producing mountains of vegetables.
As if to make up for the long wet spring, we had lovely fall weather, which enabled us to harvest all of the cauliflower without any damage from freezing. We also had a bumper fall cabbage crop.
We harvested fingerling potatoes, sweet potatoes, and popcorn in October. All of these were new for us to grow this year.
We still have some winter squash left to use in the next couple of months. They have a long storage life, giving variety to seasonal eating in the winter months.
The cats were a never-ending source of amusement in addition to their stellar performance in keeping the mice and voles in check.
Overwintered purple sprouting broccoli will be ready for harvesting next month. In the meantime, we plan for next year as the annual cycle will soon repeat.
See you in the Garden.
