State of the Garden

Can you spot our resident praying mantis? We found egg sacs when we were pruning in the winter, so it was nice to see that at least one made it to adulthood. They are a welcome help with insect patrol.

melons

The melons are finished for the year. We planted varieties this year with shorter maturity dates which is why they came a bit earlier than in previous years.

tomato

Tomato season is still going strong. We have some new favorites and some which we will not plant again. But they are all very productive which translates into lots of tomatoes to harvest and process into delicious dishes.

peppers

The peppers are also very productive this year. We will be harvesting the hot peppers which have turned red starting next week.

potatoes

We had a couple of the potato plants starting to die back, so unable to restrain our curiosity, we harvested the two plants. Digging potatoes is like digging for treasure. We have stored them until you need them.

cucumbers

Cucumbers have slowed down, but they will have a few more fruit to come as it cools down. They don’t like hot weather.

radicchio, broccoli and cauliflower

We were able to plant the fall and winter radicchio, broccoli and cauliflower and, more importantly, keep them alive through the recent heat wave. If all goes well, we will have cauliflower this fall, throughout the rest of winter and into early spring.

delicata and butternut squash

Since my thoughts are on fall/winter crops, I wanted to mention that the delicata and butternut squash are starting to change from green to tan. It will be at least a month before they are harvested. So let us enjoy summer fruits and not jump the season into fall produce yet.

See you in the garden!  -Anna
