State of the Garden

Chefs Garden Sunflower

This is why we have sunflowers scattered randomly throughout the garden- to provide late-season food for honey bees, bumble bees, and the many tiny native bees.

Zucchini & Patty Pan Squash

Chefs Garden Zucchini and Patty Pan Squashes

There is relief on the horizon for those of you with overflowing zucchini. We are seeing a slowing production in the zucchini and the patty pan squashes. We will start harvesting every other day rather than daily.

Melons

Chefs Garden Melon

We are harvesting melons a couple of times a week. Enjoy them, as the season is short. The difference between the earlier maturing variety and the latest variety is 10 days. We are still harvesting the earliest variety, so you still have time to enjoy vine-ripened melons.

Fall / Winter Crops

Chefs Garden Lettuce

The fall/winter crops we planted last week look really good. They’ve survived transplant shock and are putting on new growth. We look forward to an abundant fall/winter harvest of cauliflower, broccoli, and radicchio.

Peppers

We will harvest the hot peppers as they turn red. In the next few weeks, I see a lot of smoked paprika and hot sauce. The Gypsy peppers continue producing well. We are harvesting about once per week.

Tomatoes

Chefs Garden Yellow Tomato

Tomatoes are the star of the garden at this moment. They are putting out a steady stream of lovely fruit. We are trying to keep the kitchen manageable, but we certainly have plenty.

Beans

Chefs Garden Beans

Beans have slacked off a bit, but our harvests are still full tubs, not handfuls. We have a variety of yellow, green, and purple, which are pretty lovely.

Bees & Autumn Leaves

Chefs Garden Autumn Leaves

The bees are working hard, as usual, to gather more nectar and pollen for winter because they know that winter is around the corner. I found these leaves this week and hyperventilated, as I am not ready for summer to end.

Come out to the garden and see what we have growing.
