state of the garden

Chefs Garden State Of The Garden August 21, 2022 Harvest Collage

Freshly Grown PeppersPeppers beyond Gypsy, Shishito, and Padrons will be ready soon. As you can see, the sweet cayennes are turning yellow, soon followed by red. The first of the lunchbox peppers are also turning color.

Tomatoes are picking up. We’re harvesting from all the varieties planted except the largest one, “Wild Boar Pineapple Pig.” Yes, we chose that one solely because of its name. There are lots of large green fruit, so there will be a harvest from them eventually. And we will take photos.

Freshly Grown EggplantThe Eggplant is showing its true colors – purple. Ready when you need them.

I know you can hardly keep up with the flood of summer squashes and cucumbers. But, it’s sobering to think that in just 4 weeks, the surge will have dwindled to a trickle.

Freshly Grown BasilAs usual, we have basil by the ton. We planted a second crop which we’re harvesting. This allows the bees to gather the nectar from the flowers of the first planting.

The crops planted for fall and winter harvesting are settling in and growing well.Chef's Garden Sunflowers

For some reason, micro-greens are challenging right now. To compensate, we plant twice a week, so we have enough. I expect to have a glut of micros soon, just not yet.

We’re most curious about what is happening underground in the fingerling and sweet potato patches. It’s hard to restrain ourselves from digging. The top growth is luxurious. We planted part of the sweet potatoes in the greenhouse and the others outside under a row cover.

Come on out to the garden to see what else we have growing.
