State of the Garden

Flowering Purple Sprouting Broccoli

The smaller sprouts of the purple sprouting broccoli are going to flower. These flowers are very popular with the bees. Let us know if you would like some, and we will harvest them (early in the morning before the bees are abroad)!

We are waiting for a three-day rain break. The ground is still very wet, which limits what we can do outside. We are slowly removing weeds from perennial plantings and watching the weather.

Garden Peas

Here’s a pea update. They are looking excellent! We planted both shelling peas and snap peas. We expect an excellent harvest if we can avoid 100-degree weather until July. Peas throw a fit when it gets hot. They complain and are no longer harvestable because they become leathery, diseased, and taste like animal feed!

Peppers & Tomatoes

We transplanted the peppers and tomatoes this week. They will be outside in a month, which is hard to comprehend. The tables are filled with plants, which means – Spring!

Pea Shoots

We have plenty of pea shoots to harvest. Let us know when you need them to keep them as fresh as possible, and we will prioritize their harvesting. Pea shoots wilt quickly so I’d rather they didn’t wilt in the walk-in.

Miner's Lettuce

The miner’s lettuce is starting to flower. Although it is not as flavorful now, it has the shortest harvesting period.

Honey Bees

We’ve had two weeks of fairly cold and wet weather, which made me a bit nervous about the bees. Sure enough, on Friday, the first warm and windless day, we caught a swarm of bees. They know that it’s spring and time to reproduce. Fortunately, we caught them and are giving them a new home in the apiary.
