State of the Garden

Chef's Garden Violas

The violas are happy with spring. We planted them throughout the garden to provide a good supply of flowers for all the kitchen needs. We are also harvesting borage and calendula flowers. We will harvest broccoli flowers until they are gone.

Broccoli & Cauliflower

The purple broccoli is almost finished, and the white cauliflower is still a few weeks away from harvestable size.

Green Garlic

We have more green garlic, which we will start harvesting this coming week.

Pea Shoots

It is pea shoot season! We are harvesting regularly. If you need more, let us know. When we planted the cover crop, we added extra pea seeds to have an abundance of peas for the very short season that they are available.

Chervil

We have a stock tank of chervil, which we planted last fall and are now harvesting. It’s looking nice. However, because we protect it with shade cloth, it is easy to overlook. You might need to remind us when you run low.

Horseradish

We have reduced the amount of horseradish planted by half, as we had way more than was ever needed.

Rhubarb

Rhubarb time! Yes, we harvested the first of the rhubarb this week. We will have it available for many more weeks.

Onion Chive Flower Buds

These little “onion domes” are chive flower buds. Very shortly, we will have chive blossoms, which we will harvest.

Herbs

Oregano, rosemary, thyme, chives, and mint are the growing and harvestable herbs in the garden. We will have a short break in parsley between overwintered and spring crops. We will be seeding basil soon. It has been too cold and damp for basil to grow or germinate. We are testing this by seeding micro basil this week.
