Botanical Name: Garrya elliptica

Plant Characteristics: Type is an evergreen shrub, erect, dense, up to 8 feet tall and wide if not pruned. Prune shortly after flowering finishes so the plant has time to grow the buds which will flower the next winter. The leaves are slightly turned under causing the leaves to look wavy. Flowers in late February with long catkin like clusters, (silk tassels). Fruits are in grape-like clusters, which birds eat.

How to Grow: Grow in sun or part shade. It is not fussy about soil type, as long as it is well drained.

Where to Grow: Native to the Coast Range and near the Pacific Ocean from SW Oregon to southern California.

Location @ The Allison: These are planted in the islands around the parking lot. Walk around the grounds to find other places where they are showing their beauty.
