State Of The Garden

Chefs Garden Colorful Dahlia

The flowers enjoy cooler temperatures, gentler sunlight, and rain. The dahlias are particularly glad for fall weather. It is an excellent time to use nasturtium flowers and leaves as they grow very well without heat stress.

Can You find The Cat?

We had company this week when we were picking the beans. If you look closely, you will notice one of the cats perched on the raspberry end-post in the sunchoke flowers.

We harvested the first of the sunchokes this week. It was a novelty to not be rooting through muddy soil to find them. We planted twice the amount as in previous years.

I suspect the bean harvest is ending, but I will leave the vines for another week to see if they produce more.

Tomatoes

We found a surprising amount ofusable tomatoes. However, this is the final harvest as a series of rain storms are heading our way. Rain plus cool temperatures equals cracked and split fruit.

We are still finding several zucchini and cucumbers, but we have reduced our weekly harvesting to once.

Winter Squash

The winter squash vines have finished their job of nourishing fruit and are dying back. We will harvest the butternut and delicata squashes in the next few weeks. Their outer shell needs to harden to last several months in storage.

A Bounty Of Peppers!

The last of the pepper bounty is being harvested. Expect to receive a boatload of all varieties of peppers over the next few days.

The earliest of the cauliflower, Purple Moon, has started wrapping its leaves around tiny cauliflower buds. We should harvest in the next 30 days. The rest of the cauliflower varieties will follow in succession afterward.

The flowers enjoy cooler temperatures, a more gentle sun, and rain. The dahlias are particularly glad for fall weather. It is an excellent time to use nasturtium flowers and leaves as they grow well without heat stress.

Come out to the garden to see what else we have growing!
