State Of The Garden

Chefs Garden Camas Flowers

CAMAS | The camas, which the gardeners started from bulbs last spring, are blooming! They spent the summer in pots while the gardeners waged war on the weeds in the area where they are now planted. Anna Ashby, our master gardener, is excited about their successful transplanting since they were only dried down stems and bulbs when first planted.

MICRO-GREENS | Garden activities are in full swing. The grass and weeds are competing for the who-can-grow-the-fastest award. The micro-greens have ramped up their growth as well. The gardeners are sowing a wider variety now that it’s warmer.

TOMATOES | The garden’s tomato supply is keeping up with the demand. The gardeners moved the tomatoes into the shade outside the greenhouse to get them ready to face the real world in the next week or so.

PEPPERS & EGGPLANTS | Peppers and eggplants are still basking in the greenhouse heat. The gardeners would like them to grow larger before they face the real world.

RHUBARB | Now is the time to use rhubarb. It’s growing rapidly, and the garden has a lot. Some are growing up on the hill where The Allison rototilled last year. Anna says, “I guess the threat of extinction by rototiller spurred them on to prove they could be a viable plant!”

PEAS | The Peas are growing quickly. No blooms yet, but surely they will come soon. The garden has both snap peas as well as shelling peas. The gardeners are presuming that the temperatures will moderate so the plants continue to thrive.

CARROTS | The carrots for the upcoming Chef to Soil Dinner in June look good. The gardeners have planted in succession, hoping that at least one, if not more, of the plantings will yield the perfect-sized product on the dinner day.

Come on out to the garden and see what else is growing!
