state of the garden

December 19, 2022 - State Of Chefs Garden

The first serious cold weather showed up for a day, making us glad that we had taken the precaution of covering the parsley and chard with a frost blanket. Everything else still standing is cold, hardy, and will be sweeter.

Broccoli has some growing to do before we start harvesting, but at least we can see the potential heads forming on more and more plants. So check back with us next month.

The Dragons Tongue mustard is ready whenever you want to add mustard greens to your menu. In the meantime, they are slowly growing.

The winter squash still left in the greenhouse fills one table: Georgia Candy Roaster, Sunshine kabocha, Cinderella, and Galueaux d’Esines. Let us know when you need more.

Leeks are hardy and not even fazed by freezing weather. They are still on the small side for harvesting. I expect to be able to harvest them by late winter.

Today, the amount of daylight here is 8 hours and 44 minutes. We have three more days until the shortest day. The first week of February will see us with the magical number of 10 hours of daylight. That is the point in the greenhouse where plant growth starts exploding. So hang in there.

In the meantime, come out to the garden to see what else we have growing.
