State of the Garden

The sun shining through the greenhouse with the garden cats resting in the light.
A September day dawning through the greenhouse looks like a spotlight shining. The cats, which are in the photo, are coming off night mouse patrol and heading for their morning nap. Their presence continues to be the best deterrent that we have for mice and voles.

tomatoes and peppers

You can feel it in the air – the seasons are changing. However, we still have an abundance of late summer flowers and produce. Tomatoes have slowed but are still producing very well, and peppers are also continuing to produce.

yellow monte gusto beans

The beans have revived. At least the yellow Monte Gusto beans have revived. They took a break during the hot weather, but now they have decided that their goal in life is to keep the gardeners busy harvesting. That means that you will have abundant beans for a few more weeks.

fennel

This current planting of fennel will be ready to harvest within the next week. If you want baby fennel, we can harvest now, otherwise, we will wait until they are a bit larger.

We have fennel flowers on a few volunteer plants. We will make a point to bring some inside.

lettuce

Lettuce is back in the running. At least half of the planted lettuce is romaine which we are waiting for it to go from loose leaf to heads. The rest of the lettuce we are harvesting regularly.

herbs

Herbs are holding steady.

sweet potatoes

We will harvest sweet potatoes soon, before our non-friends, the gophers, find them. We harvested one plant this week with good-sized tubers, so the rest are probably the same.

winter squashes

The other plants that are getting close to harvesting are the winter squashes. In this case, delicata squash and butternut.

It is not yet time to change the menu, but you can certainly be planning as change time is rapidly approaching.

See you in the garden!  -Anna
