state of the garden

Chefs Garden Summer Sunflower

The first sunflower of the summer has officially opened just in time for the summer solstice. Summer is here!

Edible Flowers

It is nice to see variety in our edible flowers. We still harvest the violas, gem marigolds, nasturtiums, and borage flowers. The chive blossoms are pretty much finished for now. We will cut back the plants, fertilize them, and expect another harvest later this summer.

Elephant Garlic Bulbs

Chefs Garden Elephant Garlic Bulbs

The elephant garlic bulbs are shaping up. The tops are yellowing but will grow more over the next month before we harvest the bulbs.

Snap Peas

The snap peas are almost finished. They struggle when the weather turns hot like it has been this past week. The shelling peas are still abundantly producing. Enjoy their short season. It seems crazy, but we plant them in February to enjoy a brief, excellent harvest in June. That’s life in the garden!

Carrots & Dill

Chefs Garden Dill and Carrots

We planted carrots into this stock tank. They are there but hidden in a forest of dill! We had dill in this spot last year, and it has evidently self-seeded! This means plenty of dill for the kitchen. We need to slow down when harvesting so that we leave the carrot tops while harvesting the dill tops.

Sweet Potatoes

Chefs Garden Sweet Potato Vines

The sweet potatoes have agreed to grow where we planted them. They are putting out new growth and looking quite healthy. We’ll see how tame we can keep the vines!

Squash, Cucumbers, Pumpkins & Beans

Squash, cucumbers, pumpkins, and beans are all thriving, promising a bountiful harvest next month. Soon, we will be surrounded by mountains of zucchini, a testament to the garden’s abundance!

Strawberries

Strawberries are going strong. We’re harvesting them twice per week.

Come on out to the garden to see what else we have growing.
