State of The Garden

Chef's Garden Gourds And Winter Squashes

The different vegetables pictured this week are a reflection of the changing season. We are harvesting these gourds and winter squashes as their outer shells harden and the plants die back.

Zucchini & Cucumbers

We removed the zucchini and cucumber plants this past week after our final harvest. Our harvests will be zucchini-free until next July!

Peppers & Tomatoes

We have most likely harvested the final round of peppers and tomatoes. They tend to split or rot because of the rain and cool temperatures. Besides that, the flavor is inferior to what it was in August when there was plenty of sunlight.

Kohlrabi

Chef's Garden Kohlrabi

Let’s move away from the past and into the here and now. We could harvest a few kohlrabi now; the rest are not far behind. The kohlrabi are multiplying; this year, we have a good selection of whitish, greenish, and purple kohlrabi.

Kale

Chef's Garden Red Russian Kale

Kaleis ready for harvesting. We have several varieties growing this year, all doing very well. This is Red Russian kale in the photo. It is very hardy, surviving surprisingly cold weather.

Rainbow Chard

The rainbow chard is small, as we recently planted it in the garden. If you need baby chard, let us know. Otherwise, we will let it grow.

Broccoli & Cauliflower

Chef's Garden Purple Cauliflower

Remember the aphid infestation on the broccoli and cauliflower last year? They have been a non-issue this year. We are rejoicing in this minor miracle.

We won’t be harvesting broccoli for several months. The plants have settled down to the serious business of growing while we still have some warm days of sunshine.

We have one precocious cauliflower; the rest are tightly wrapped tiny heads. This head is larger and more open, but it’s the promise of much more cauliflower. This year, we are growing five different varieties. We will have a colorful autumn.

Come on out to the garden to see what else we have growing!
