We will have flowers from kale, collards, and broccoli until the soil dries enough for rototilling. We will include them in our regular edible flower harvest schedule.
overwintered broccoli sprouts
The overwintered broccoli sprouts are smaller as we move farther from the initial sprouts. Their growth is accelerating rapidly to flowering. We expect them to last another couple of weeks before everything goes to flowers.
cauliflower
This week, we had a pleasant surprise when we walked through the cauliflower row from a different direction—we found viable heads! This cauliflower was planted the first week of July, transplanted into the garden in August, survived the onslaught of flea beetles and heat, survived the frozenness of January, and finally produced decent heads in April! Enjoy this excellent addition to our harvest.
early vegetables
We planted the first of the early vegetables in the outside stock tanks. So far, only the radishes and turnips have germinated. Determining whether the carrots and beets will germinate will take another 2-3 weeks. We will plant more this coming week. Our goal is to plant every other week so that the veggies will be the right size for the garden dinner in May!
spring flowers
We found the first flower stalk on the camas this week. I expect we will see the first flowers next week.
rhubarb
The rhubarb is a few weeks away from being large enough to harvest. Let us know when you need more for the kitchen.
herbs
We are harvesting and dehydrating mint and oregano. The mint is for The Spa, and the oregano is for the kitchen. Our thyme is pathetic. Winter was not kind. Consequently, we will be purchasing and then propagating more plants.
strawberries
The Strawberriesare awake and blooming. We expect to be able to harvest them in late May. The weather has to cooperate with us for that to happen.
There is some nice weather coming up next week. Come out to the garden to see what else we have growing.
