State of The Garden

Chef's Garden Spring Violas
Spring marches on despite what feels like the return of winter weather. While we wait to work the ground for vegetables, we are busy weeding and planting into the permanent flower beds. So often, the switch from spring to summer weather patterns is abrupt. We are doing what we can to prepare for the sudden onslaught of everything happening all at once. We have violas scattered throughout the Garden. Spring is their favorite weather, so we have plenty, which we are harvesting regularly.

Snap Peas

Peas are another plant that grows best in the cool and lengthening spring days. They have been growing steadily under their frost-blanket-covered tunnel. Now they get to face the music of real weather since sunny days make the covered tunnels too warm for happy peas. We hope to be harvesting snap peas in a month or so.

Elephant Garlic

The elephant garlic can be harvested for green garlic.

Lettuce

Lettuce continues to grow well. We have planted a test batch in two outside stock tanks and are still planting it in the greenhouse. We harvest twice a week.

Greenhouse Starts

The greenhouse continues to be home to the starts of the warm season plants, such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant. They are all on track to be planted outside within the next month.

Micro-Greens

Micro-green production continues unabated. We are beginning to add some warm-season micros into the mix. Their germination can be spotty depending on the weather in the week they were seeded.

Honey Bees

Bees are a big part of our spring in the Garden. This week, we received a shipment of queen bees to head new colonies of bees. This is all part of our swam reduction plan. The queens were each in a little wooden cage within a cardboard box. Loose nurse bees surrounded the queens and cared for them during transit.

Come on out to the Garden to see what else we have growing.
