State Of The Garden

Chefs Garden Nasturtiums

The garden has transformed during the last two weeks. The Allison Gardeners have been planting, planting, planting. Now comes the weeding, weeding, weeding part of the summer.

NASTURTIUMS | The volunteer nasturtiums are blooming. So far, aphids have not found them. Anna Ashby, the master gardener, says, “We will enjoy them until the heat and aphids bring them to an end for a time. We will plant more so we will have plenty on hand.”

SHISO | Shiso is looking good, and the gardeners should be able to start harvesting some soon.

TURNIPS | The gardeners harvested the first of the turnips. They have been growing under a row cover, which is nice.

RADISHES & LETTUCE | The gardeners will harvest more radishes and lettuce this week. So far, the temperatures have been perfect for growing both of them.

HERBS & BASIL | The gardeners are harvesting all of the herbs except basil, but it won’t be long before they can harvest it too.

SNAP PEAS | This is Anna’s favorite season, as they are ready to start harvesting snap peas! Anna says, “The peas are so good right now. The weather has been perfect, making up for a cold, wet spring.”

STRAWBERRIES | Ripe strawberries are coming. The gardeners have not been hovering over them because of their rush to get everything else planted and the irrigation working. Soon there will be beautiful berries.

FAVA BEANS | It is time for all hands on deck for shelling fava beans. The gardeners will start harvesting this coming week. Early peas are sweeter than later peas, and these early favas are sweet and tender enough to eat the seed coat and inner seed.
