State of the Garden

Chefs Garden Blanketed In Snow

It was undoubtedly a windy and cold weekend. Fortunately, we had plenty of notice to prepare the garden for the Arctic Blast! Appearances are deceiving. It was 15 degrees with wind chill, making it 10 degrees on Saturday morning. Brrr!

Fennel

We harvested the remainder of the fennel. We will have to wait until the spring planting is in the ground for more.

Celeriac

We harvested one bed of celeriac. There are two more beds of celeriac still in the ground. We covered them with a frost blanket over hoops, but we don’t know how well they will survive the freeze and accompanying desiccating wind.

Squashes

We are making inroads in our supply of butternut, delicata squashes, and sweet potatoes. We are not close to the end yet, but we’ll keep you posted.

Micro-greens

We have a steady supply of micro-greens. Each time we harvest, we strive to have a variety of colors, textures, and flavors.

Lettuces

The majority of the stock tanks in the greenhouse are home to lettuces. We can harvest some each week, but the growth is still very slow. I need to be patient for a few more weeks; then, we will notice a difference in growth. Since December 21st, we have gained 20 minutes more light each day. The plants in the greenhouse will reflect that difference by February.

Broccoli

The broccoli is waiting for the weather to come to its senses and get above freezing.

See you in the garden when it is no longer freezing!
