The Allison Inn And Spa

State Of The Garden

Calendula Flowers

These are calendula flowers that are still blooming! The Allison Spa uses these after we dehydrate them. About every 10 days, we have enough to harvest.

We have reached the shortest day of the year at 8 hours and 43 minutes. Now, on to more daylight! What I find fascinating is that honey bees respond to the increasing day length. The queen resumes laying eggs even though there is no nectar from flowers coming into the hive, and we cannot see the light increasing, but they can sense it. So when the early flowers are out, forager bees will be ready to collect their nectar and pollen.

Celeriac

Celeriac

We still have an abundance of celeriac available for harvesting. It has been quietly growing since last May and is now quite large. So far, we have not provided any frost protection, but we will do so if or when a severe freeze is predicted.

Sunchokes

We have harvested less than half of the sunchokes. Just let us know when you need more. We have better quality by storing them in the ground than in the refrigerator. So, we prefer to harvest them as they are required.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet Potatoes
We sorted through the sweet potatoes this week and tested several of them. They are still in good shape and are ready to be used. Let us know when you need some, and we will bring them to the kitchen.

Butternut & Delicata Squash

Winter Squashes And Sweet Potatoes
We will keep a supply of butternut and delicata in the kitchen until we use all that is stored in the greenhouse.

The Garden Cats

Garden Cats
The cats say thank you for allowing them to live in the garden. They enjoy being our rodent patrol. The gardeners really appreciate having delegated that particular job!

Come on out to the garden to see what else we have growing.
