Buckle up because the summer harvest season is here!
Eggplant
The gardeners harvested the first of the eggplant. They have a small planting of these two varieties and will gather as they reach this size.
Beans
The gardeners looked through the bean patch and found two red tubs of beans! They will harvest them regularly. These first beans have already been set aside for a special dinner, but after that, they will be flooding the kitchen’s walk-in.
Cucumbers
The other new item harvested this week was the first of the cucumbers! The Armenian cucumbers are the most vigorous right now, so the garden will have many of those at the beginning. The other varieties will soon kick in, so there will be plenty of pickling in the future!
ZUCCHINI & PATTY PAN SQUASH
Speaking of flooding the walk-in, the gardeners are harvesting a lot of green and yellow zucchini each day, along with patty pan squashes.
PURPLE FILET BEAN
The gardeners used to grow bush beans because they were the only ones in the fine filet bean shape. At first, the gardeners found a green pole variety, which worked well and tasted great, then a long, thin yellow variety. Life has improved for the gardeners because they now have a purple filet bean and a pole bean. No more crawling along a row of beans!
TOMATOES
Tomatoes are increasing. The gardeners look through the plants a couple of times a week to harvest what is ready.
PADRON & SHISHITO PEPPERS
The gardeners harvest Padron and Shishito peppers once or twice weekly.
GYPSY PEPPERS
Anna Ashby, master gardener and beekeeper of The Allison, says, “As long as I’m thinking about peppers, we could start harvesting Gypsy peppers. As usual, the plants are full, and the peppers are looking great.”
A lot is growing in the garden right now, so come out for a visit!
