State Of The Garden

Crocosmia Flowers

Summer is upon us! The first summer blooms of the dahlias and crocosmia have made their presence known.

GREEN TOMATOES | There are green tomatoes, and the garden should have the first of the ripe tomatoes within the next 3-4 weeks.

BABY PEPPERS | The garden also has baby peppers. They also need another 3-4 weeks before there is much to harvest.

LETTUCE | Lettuce is harvested regularly, trying to beat the heat!

PARSLEY | Parsley is looking good and is harvested as needed.

BEANS | Beans are just about to bloom. Right now, they are growing like it’s the middle of summer! The gardeners had good germination, so they will have plenty of beans when harvesting begins.

FENNEL | The fennel moved quickly from baby fennel to bolting fennel. The gardeners will let it flower; more have been planted.

SHISO | Anna Ashby, master gardener at The Allison, says, “I haven’t mentioned the shiso in some time. Keep it in mind, as we have plenty of it. We are also growing and harvesting shiso at the micro-green stage.”

MICRO-GREENS | Micro-greens are growing at their peak speed. The garden was getting low on seeds, so Anna ordered more for more varieties to grow shortly.

BASIL | Basil of all sorts is available for harvesting. Anna tries not to overlook it. She says, “It isn’t a complainer drawing attention to itself. We have a genevose type, a large leaf variety, Thai basil, and more. Plus, we have two succession plantings coming up.”

Every week the gardeners find different flowers blooming in the pollinator meadow, so come on out to the garden to see what else you can find. See you in the garden!
